Lesson Planning

General considerations for planning to be effective:

• Context of lesson in scheme of work
• Know your class (differentiation, EAL, G&T...)
• Have a clear objective - know what you want to get out of them
• Timing
• Resources
• Structure

The Hook: Use an attention grabbing starter. Why does it keep you interested? Do you want to know how it ended? Were you disappointed when it ended? Would you like to see it again? Eg....

• World War Z movie trailer
• Make as many paper aeroplanes as you can in 90 seconds...GO!

Obviously whatever you do needs to link in some way into the theme of the lesson. Have you planned the remainder of the lesson to keep them all engaged and challenged?

This comes back to techniques such as marketplace idea sharing lessons. Students are actively teaching others and are therefore more likely to retain the information.

5 E's instructional model for planning:

Engage: Set hooks and initiate connections to past learning.
Explore: Questioning.
Explain: Use vocabulary and literacy within context. Use mini-plenaries to assess learning.
Extend: Use new knowledge to make new connections.
Evaluate: Assess level and depth of learning which has taken place.
